he section of the historical records of
“Ettore Pomarici Santomasi” Foundation in Gravina has few volumes and plenty of sheets and paper pamphlets.
The archive has been created thanks to donations made by important families in Gravina who wanted to give what they had for the benefit of the community. The Pomarici Santomasi family was the first one to give money; in this family there were men of relevant importance, experts of various arts (law, comedy, tragedy as well as music and poetry), and some clergymen.
Besides this family we can mention the Pellicciari, Calderoni Martini, Lettieri, Tarantino, Jannuzzi, Scacchi, Nardone, Desiante and recently D’Ecclesiis.
The archive includes things of relevant value.
Noteworthy are the extracts from the Angevin Register, from the Camera della Sommaria, from Collaterale and from other sections of the Archive of the State of Naples. These are manuscripts, ordered by the On. Pasquale Calderoni Martini to Riccardo Bevere, from the Archive of the State of Naples, between 1930 and 1933.
These extracts have a double importance. First of all, the historical value for all the information useful for the rebuilt of our past; secondly, the archival relevance as a considerable amount of the Archive of State of Naples was destroyed during the II World War because of a big fire caused by the German forces on September 1943.
Of great value are three volumes of Notarial Protocols of XVII, XVIII and XIX centuries, while of local interest are the Municipal Statute of Gravina of 1560 (the so-called “Red book”), the Apprezzo of the town of Gravina, written by Virgilio De Marino in 1608, the dotal Writings of XVI, XVII, XVIII centuries, musical works from famous local musicians (Salvatore Fighera, Domenico, Giacomo Lapolla and Antonio Pomarici Santomasi) as well as works on brigandage, etc…
Moreover, we can find works belonging to ancient ages such as the Statute of the Town (1394) and the Rules for a Christian life written by the Abbot Bernardo in 1492 and the Fund by the local historian Domenico Nardone, together with the notes for the drawing up and the copies of the proofs of the volume “Historical data about the Town of Gravina”, of which Domenico Nardone gave the copyright to our Foundation in 1943.
On March 1991, the Foundation obtained funds for the reorganization and the inventory of the Historical
Archive from the Culture Councillorship of Apulia Regional Council.
The Foundation then assigned this task of reorganizing and inventorying the Historical Archive to a team of specialists.
The works for the reorganization and inventory were assigned to a team of specialists under the supervision of the Apulian Archival Superintendence; they were concluded in June 1992.
Even the
Archive of the Foundation, like the Library, got the award as being of “local interest” with the Decree of the President of the Apulian Regional Council (n.166, April 9th 1986).
This special award, with regional funds, led to the restoration of parchments and paper stuff of the Archive.
The works for the restoration were carried out in 1996 in the laboratory of the Benedectine Sanctuary “Madonna della Scala” in Noci.
Recently, it had the award to be also “Historical Archive” from the Ministry of the Cultural Heritage through the Apulian Archival Superintendence.
The abundance and the complexity of the Archive led the cultural specialists, who worked for the reorganization and the inventory, to make the following chronological order:
