Some years ago the cultural department of the regional government contributed to the purchase of shelves and, in part, to the restoration of the old, rare and valuable book heritage (“cinquecentine”, i.e. books belonging to the XVI century). This restoration took place in the Laboratory of Madonna della Scala Abbey in Noci.
These old books belonging to the Foundation’s library are included - with BA/0143 acronym - in the National Census of Italian Publications of XVI century edited by the Central Institute of the Unique Catalogue of the Italian Libraries and Bibliographical Information (ICCU).

The Library has got an official acknowledgement by the President of regional government through the decree nr. 166 passed on April 9th, 1986.
The Library has two inventory logbooks: one Chronological, the other Topographic. The first includes (till the day December the 10th, 2007) 38362 volumes that have been registered and filed. The Topographic logbook is in its initial stage.
The filing process is performed in accordance to the Italian Cataloguing for Author Rules and the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Monographic Publications [ISBD (M)].

The Library has also two file types: one ordered according to the author, the other to the topic.br /> Dislocated in 9 rooms, “Ettore Pomarici Santomasi” Foundation’s Library has been a vital role in the cultural and social context both of Gravina and the bordering towns since 75 years ago: it is the only Library open to the public in our town.

It includes a lot of old and valuable works, such as:
  •  2 incunabulums;
  •  229 “Cinquecentine” (16th century books);
  • 400  “Seicentine” (17th century books);
  • 2292 “Settecentine” (18th century books);
  • 31 volumes of the “Encyclopedie des Sciences, des Arts e des Métiers” by Diderot and D’Alembert - Troisieme edition. Livorno, 1770 - 1779;
  • 41 volumes by Pope Benedict XIII (Francesco Maria Orsini, born in Gravina);
  • 61 volumes by the scientist Arcangelo Scacchi from Gravina;
  • 36 volumes of the Italian Encyclopedia of Science, Literature and Arts published by Giovanni Treccani Institute – I° edition of 1929-1939 with relative updating up to 2006;
  • 1° volume of “Hell” by Dante Alighieri with illustrations by Gustav Dorè;
  • 121 volumes of Chinese literature
  • 41 volumes ot the scientist Arcangelo Scacchi.

In the last years, thanks to the implementation of the New Foundation’s Statute, the Library has crossed a period of huge growth and development; it’s getting a significant increase both of public (students as well as Italian and/or foreign scholars) and of new books and equipments.
As said, more and more people have recently visited the Foundation’s Library, especially scholars for their researches and thesis, particularly on Gravina’s history and territory; many people frequently consult also the Official Gazette – both the General Series (about Laws and Decrees of the Italian Government) and the 4th Special Series on public Competitions – and Lex (i.e., compact disks edited by Utet for conducting electronic researches on the Italian legislation from 1861 to 1997since 1997).
